I wrote Shade of This Tree on the porch while living in tropical northeast Brazil thinking about the past and the future while trying my best to be content in the present. More specifically, how the choice I made in the past to travel and live a semi-nomadic lifestyle ended a relationship and brought me terrible pain; but also how the same choice brought me immense pleasure in the present; and how continuing this same lifestyle would most likely end other relationships in the future. It was the realization of the Traveler's Curse which any true traveler is familiar with. It was the realization that I should probably put roots down somewhere. The song has Citizen Cope, Stephen Marley and Ben Harper vibes.
